At a glance: How to surf anonymously & use other profiles with CyberGhost for Android

The CyberGhost Android app offers you both, basic functionality of a full grown virtual private network (VPN) such as anonymity by hiding your IP address and additional features such as tracking prevention and ad blocking.

To start using CyberGhost, open the app from inside your app pool or via the resp. home screen icon.

While starting CyberGhost scans for wireless networks. If finding one, the app asks, if it should protect and encrypt it:

  • Protect: CyberGhost activates the VPN connection with the last valid settings (when starting the app for the first time it's set to automatic country and server choice).
  • Ignore: CyberGhost doesn't activate a VPN connection now, but of course you can activate a VPN connection manually at any time.
  • Remember my decision for this Hotspot: When entering this network the next time, CyberGhost recognizes it, remembers your decision and protects automatically without asking again or ignores it. You can change this behavior anytime in the apps settings page.

If this is the first time you ever started CyberGhost, tap on 'Ignore' and don't save your decision. This gives you some time to better learn about the app.

App screen

The app subsists of a couple of VPN profiles to choose from, while each screen represents one. To choose a different one, simply slide the description pane to the right, resp. to the left.

Secure Wi-Fi Hotspot

CyberGhost is able to automatically detect potentially unsafe Wi-Fi networks and immediately protect the user's device, basically by encrypting all Internet connections with 256-bit AES and changing the current IP address.

Additional available are a tracking blocker that prevents activity tracker from being activated (such as the Facebook 'Like' button) and a malicious content protection, both activated by default and reachable via the 'Options' button.

Both additional functions are processed directly by the CyberGhost servers, before any data gets transmitted to your device and therefor don't need any of your device's resources.

Activation

The moment you enter a free or password-protected Wi-Fi, CyberGhost recognizes, if it's a known or unknown network. If unknown, the app asks, if it should protect your device. If known, the device will be protected automatically, if you have configured the respective network to be handled that way.

Otherwise start the profile manually by tapping on the button 'Start Protection', either on the profile's main screen or on the 'Options' page.

Connection page

Once the profile is enabled, the interface will inform you about the ongoing process and, after successfully connected to the CyberGhost network, about the characteristics of the current connection, such as number of tracking attempts blocked and number of malicious content blocked.

To disconnect from the current connection tap on 'Stop Protection'.

In case a platform operates in more than one country, you also need to choose the correct location. Example: As a German abroad you want to watch the German content from Amazon and decide for 'Germany', while as an American abroad you decide for 'USA'.
