How to manually define servers with CyberGhost for Mac OS

CyberGhost owns an extensive server pool throughout many countries in West and East Europe, the USA, South America, Asia and Australia. A user may log in per default automatically on a server in one of the available countries, but can also choose his or her favorite location manually by either changing the respective country via a list called 'Simulated Country' or by directly changing an individual server.

If you want to connect to a certain location or directly to a certain server, click in the main window on the list 'Simulated Country' (bottom left) and choose the wanted country. Has a country been defined before, the respective country name replaces the entry 'Automatic'.

As long as the location entry shows 'Automatic', CyberGhost connects to the nearest server in your country with the best performance. After changing the destination it will be the nearest server with the best performance in that country. When choosing a single server (see below) the automatic server choice will be deactivated completely.

Country Choice

If you want to log in from a different country, e.g. to access blocked content, click on 'Automatic' and choose the respective country. Depending on your subscription (Free, Premium, Premium Plus, Special Edition, Promotion) not all locations might be available (unavailable locations are marked with a yellow star).

Mark the location you want and then click on 'OK'. The chosen country will be displayed in the info line.

Manual Server Selection

If you want to connect to a certain single server in a certain country, click at the bottom right of the main window at 'Simulated Location' or alternatively in the country list on the button 'Choose specific server'.

The server list delivers an oversight of all servers online, sorted by countries. Now click on the server you want and then on 'OK'. Depending on your subscription (Free, Premium, Premium Plus, Special Edition, Promotion) not all servers might be available.

The server list also provide you with the following information:

  • Name: A server's indication in the form of 'Town-SXX-IXX',  e.g. 'NewYork-S03-I06', whereas the following details are part of the label:
    • SXX: Server number XX - this is the physical machine, hosting a different number of virtual servers (see below 'Instance number')
    • IXX: Instance number XX - Every host system has multiple network cards and IP addresses, so one can easily set up multiple virtual servers, each consistent of its own operating system and thoroughly separated from the other virtual servers. Memory, CPU, network card, file system etc. will not be shared among virtual servers. Every virtual server has its own entry in the server list and its own IP address. The concentration in groups of dedicated systems takes place for resource reasons and the shielding of all single systems.
  • *: An asterisk right next to a server name means that this server is not included in your current CyberGhost plan. Please choose a different one.
  • !: An exclamation mark right next to a server name means that the respective server won't allow P2P traffic such as torrents. Usually these are free servers and servers located on US or Russian territory, Singapore, Australia and Hong Kong.
  • Users online: The number of currently logged in users on the respective server. Please note that a high amount of users equals an additional protection of your online anonymity (since many users share the same IP address) and a low number grants a broader bandwidth (therefore a higher surfing speed).

Activate connection

To activate a manually chosen connection, click on the yellow button.

If a different connection is still in charge, it will be disconnected first. In the time between two connections, no Internet traffic is allowed.

Server overview on the CyberGhost homepage

Similar to your client's server list and status bar, the server overview of the CyberGhost homepage also delivers important information of all available servers online as well as the amount of users and servers online and the total bandwidth.

Click on a country to open a list of all available servers and their respective attributes like the name ('Town-SXX-IXX'), the type (Free or Premium), the online status, the usage and the amount of users being online on the server marked.

Note: The server overview on the CyberGhost homepage is just for your information and doesn't allow a server selection for the client.
