Configure OpenVPN for Mac OS (Viscosity)
Posted by Uli Brügmann on 07 November 2013 12:43 PM

On Mac OS, CyberGhost VPN can be used with OpenVPN, if the following requirements are met: the OpenVPN client Viscosity is preinstalled on your Mac platform, you own a Premium or Premium Plus CyberGhost subscription, you have an online CyberGhost account and a OpenVPN configuration file, which will be created for you in your account.

'Viscosity' is an OpenVPN client for MAC and Windows, but no Freeware ($9.00 at the moment). However, you can download a 30 days free trial version from their website.

 Please note!

To use L2TP/IPSec and/or PPTP on your device you need a Premium or Premium Plus subscription and a CyberGhost account. To see how to create a CyberGhost account inside the CyberGhost client, please consult this article. To see how to create an account without the client, read this article.

Step 1

Visit your CyberGhost VPN online account.

Log-in with your user data and click in the left sided menu on the entry 'Smart Phones, Tablets & Other Devices'.

Now click on 'Other Devices'.

Right beneath, select the OpenVPN protocol as the one you want to use.

Once done select the country you want to surf from, e.g. 'USA', and the operating system you want your OpenVPN configuration for. In this case it's 'Mac OS'.

Note: An OpenVPN connection can just be configured with exactly one country (the server inside this country will be chosen automatically by CyberGhost as the most convenient server available).

Now note the following data shown beneath the drop down lists. You will need this data to configure your OpenVPN connection:

  • Server: This is the address of the country you want to surf from, e.g. ''.
  • Username: This is your CyberGhost user name (account name).
  • Password: This is your CyberGhost password you use for your account (it will not be shown here).

The next step is to download the configuration file and store it on your Mac. For that please click on 'Download Configuration'.

Note: For each country, you want to surf from, you need to download its own OVPN file from your account management and rename it before copying it to the mentioned folder. That means you have to go through these steps:

  1. Choose a country, e.g. USA
  2. Download the file
  3. Rename it from ‘CyberGhost.ovpn’ to ‘CG_USA.ovpn’.
  4. Then choose the next country, e.g. Germany
  5. Download the file
  6. Rename it to ‘CG_DE.ovpn’.
  7. etc. ...

Step 2

Now download and install 'Viscosity' to establish OpenVPN on your Mac OS X platform and start the application:

Click on its symbol and choose the context menu entry 'Preferences'.

Now click on the 'plus' sign and after that on 'Import Connection > From File'.

Search for the downloaded 'CyberGhost.ovpn' file and open it.

Now you can connect to CyberGhost:

Enter your CyberGhost user name and your CyberGhost password, click "OK" and you're done!
