CAPTCHAs help websites distinguish between people and automated traffic. One of the most common examples is Google’s reCAPTCHA, which websites may use to protect logins, forms, searches, and other actions.
They may appear more often when you’re connected to a VPN. This is because you are using a VPN server that other VPN users also use to access the internet, which means you are sharing the same VPN server IP address. A high volume of requests from a shared IP can cause a website to mistake normal traffic for automated activity.
Troubleshooting CAPTCHA Issues
The troubleshooting steps depend on whether the CAPTCHA appears on Google Search or another website.
Google Search CAPTCHA
If you see too many CAPTCHAs when using Google Search:
- Try connecting to a different VPN server location. Choosing a server close to your actual location typically offers the best speeds. Learn more in our guide: Which server should I choose?
- Try an alternative search engine. If the CAPTCHA continues to appear on Google Search, you can try another search engine, such as DuckDuckGo, Ecosia, or Startpage.
Note: If you have a dedicated IP, connect to your dedicated IP server location. Because the IP is assigned only to you, it’s less likely to trigger CAPTCHAs caused by activity from multiple people sharing the same IP.
CAPTCHA on Another Website
Some websites require CAPTCHAs for actions such as signing in or submitting a form. If the CAPTCHA is a required part of the page, you’ll need to complete it to continue. It isn't caused by the VPN.
If the CAPTCHA isn't required by the website, you can try a different VPN server location that fits your use case. If the issue disappears, the original server's shared IP address may have triggered the website's security checks.
