How to Set Up OpenVPN Client on Windows 10 and 11

This guide explains how to set up and connect to CyberGhost VPN using the OpenVPN Connect client on Windows 10 and 11.

Step 1: Configure CyberGhost VPN in the Browser Portal

1. Go to your CyberGhost VPN account dashboard. If necessary, log in with your username and password.
2. Click VPN on the sidebar, and then scroll down on the page and click Configure Device.

3. On the next page, configure the settings as follows:

• Protocol: You can choose either:
  • OpenVPN if you want to use UDP. It allows higher speeds but is less stable.
  • OpenVPN TCP if you experience frequent connection issues. It’s slower but more stable.
• Country: Select the country to which you want to connect.
• Server group: Select the appropriate server group from the dropdown menu. 

Once you’re done, click Save Configuration.

5. You'll be taken back to the VPN tab. Under Routers or other devices, click View next to the device you just added.

6. On the next page you'll see your connection credentials. Take a note of the:

• Username: Generated for this configuration only. This isn’t your regular CyberGhost account username.
• Password: Generated for this configuration only. Select Show Password to view it. This is not your regular CyberGhost account password.

Important: Keep your username and password at hand. You'll need them later.

7. Then, click Download Configuration. 

This will download the .zip file containing the CyberGhost VPN configuration files onto your device. Remember where you saved this file.

Step 2: Install the OpenVPN Client

1. Download the OpenVPN client from the OpenVPN website and run the installer. 
2. Follow the on-screen prompts and click Install to install the app.

Step 3: Connect to the VPN

1. Extract the contents of the .zip file you downloaded in step 1. 
2. Launch the OpenVPN Connect app. You will be asked to agree to the service’s data collection policy. 

3. Click Upload File. 

4. Select the .ovpn file you extracted .zip file and click Import. 

5. The server file will be automatically added to the OpenVPN Connect app. Click Connect to connect to the server. 

6. Enter the username and password from step 1 and click Enter. Don’t use your regular CyberGhost account credentials.

7. You should now be successfully connected to the CyberGhost VPN server location of your choice.

To disconnect from the server, click Disconnect, then select Disconnect again on the prompt. To stop seeing that message when you disconnect, check Don’t show again.

Connect to More Countries

If you want to connect to more than one country, repeat step 1 for each additional country. Then, repeat the first four steps of the tutorial above for each extra location. Afterwards: 

1. In the OpenVPN Connect app, click Switch Profile. 

2. Choose the desired server location and click Select. 

3. Click Connect and enter
