How to Set Up OpenVPN Client on Android

As well as connecting through the CyberGhost app on Android, you can set up CyberGhost VPN manually through an OpenVPN client. This guide explains how to configure the connection. 

1. Log into your CyberGhost VPN web dashboard.
2. Tap the hamburger icon in the top right corner, then open the Download Hub.

3. Scroll down to Other Apps. Tap Configure next to “Other.”

4. Select a protocol (OpenVPN), a country (your desired server location), and a server group (e.g., Premium or Gaming servers via UDP).

Note: OpenVPN configurations are limited to one country and server group. To switch between countries or servers, you’ll need to create a separate setup for each.

5. Select any extra protection features you want from your server (optional).

6. Tap Save Configuration. You’ll be redirected to your active devices dashboard.

7. Find the “Other” device under Active VPN Devices and tap View. Note down the provided username and password.

8. Scroll down and tap Download Configuration. Tap Download again to confirm. You’ll get a .zip file containing your configuration profile, security certificates, and private key. 

9. Go to My Files > Downloads.

Note: Depending on your Android, your file explorer may have a different name or icon. If you can’t find it, you can download a third-party file explorer app from the app store.  

10. Long-press the openvpn.zip file, then tap More ( ⋮ ) > Extract and confirm.

11. Open the Play Store, then look up and install OpenVPN Connect.

12. Inside the OpenVPN Connect app, select the Upload File tab and tap Browse. 

13. Navigate to the extracted “openvpn” folder and select all the files (.ovpn, .key, and both .crt files). Tap Done and confirm that you want to import the profile when prompted.

14. Your Profile Name and Server Hostname should be filled in by default. Tap Connect, paste the username and password from step 7, and tap OK.

The OpenVPN profile toggle will turn green once you connect successfully.
