The CyberGhost Android app may not be available on some Chromebooks. In that case, you can still connect to CyberGhost by manually adding an OpenVPN connection through ChromeOS’s built-in VPN settings.

Step 1: Generate a Configuration File
To set up a CyberGhost connection via your Chromebook’s OpenVPN settings, you first need to generate and download a configuration file from your CyberGhost account.
- In your browser, go to your CyberGhost account and log in if necessary.
- Select the VPN tab, scroll down to Manual setup, and select Configure Device next to it.
- On the next page, configure the settings as follows:
-
Protocol: You can choose either:
- OpenVPN if you want to use UDP. It allows higher speeds but is less stable.
- OpenVPN TCP if you experience frequent connection issues. It’s slower but more stable.
- Country: Select the country to which you want to connect.
- Server group: Select the appropriate server group from the dropdown menu, such as Premium (general use), ZenMate Premium (specialized servers from ZenMate integration), Standard, or Gaming (optimized for lower latency and smoother gameplay).
4. Then, name the device (e.g., “Chromebook”) under Device name, and you can then also use the following extra features for your configuration:
- Protection against malicious websites: Blocks access to known harmful or unsafe websites to help protect your device while browsing.
- Block online tracking: Prevents tracking services from monitoring your online activity across websites.
- Block ads: Reduces or blocks advertisements during browsing for a cleaner experience.
- Redirect to HTTPS: Automatically redirects connections to the more secure HTTPS version of websites when available.
5. Once you’re done, click Save Configuration.
6. You’ll then be taken back to the VPN tab. Under Routers or other devices, find your newly created configuration and select View next to it.
7. On the next page you'll see your connection credentials. Note down the following, which you’ll need for later:
- Server Group: This is the address of the country (server) you want to be connected with, e.g. “12345-1-ca.cg-dialup.net.”
- Username: The username generated for this configuration. It’s unrelated to your regular CyberGhost account username.
- Password: The password generated for this configuration. This isn’t your regular CyberGhost account password.
8. Select Download configuration. This will download an archive containing the OpenVPN configuration files and certificates required to set up the VPN connection.
Step 2: Install the User Certificate
Before you can use CyberGhost on your device, you’ll need to install certificates to connect. Here’s how to do it:
- Open a new tab in Chrome.
- In the address bar, enter “chrome://settings/certificates.”
- Select the Authorities tab.
- Select Import and choose the ca.crt file from the downloaded archive.
- Wait for the certificate to install itself on your Chromebook.
Step 3: Set Up an OpenVPN Connection
After installing the certificate, you can proceed to set up your CyberGhost OpenVPN connection:
- At the bottom right, select the time.
- Select Settings, then Network.
- Select Add connection.
- Next toOpenVPN/L2TP, select Add.
- Fill out the following fields:
- Server hostname: Enter the server group name from the generated CyberGhost configuration file (from our example above, this would be: “12345-1-ca.cg-dialup.net.”)
- Service name: Accept the default entry or create your own (e.g., CyberGhost OpenVPN).
- Provider type: Open VPN.
- Username: Enter the CyberGhost username for this configuration.
- Password: Enter the CyberGhost password for this configuration.
- OTP: Leave blank.
- Server CA certificate: Select CyberGhost Root CA from the dropdown menu.
- User certificate: Select No user certificate.
- Click Connect.
Once connected, your Chromebook will route your internet traffic through the CyberGhost connection.
