Step 1: Check if Your Windows Device Supports Hosted Networks
Before you start, make sure your Windows device has a wireless adapter. You can use a built-in Wi-Fi adapter or an external USB Wi-Fi adapter.
To check if your device has a wireless adapter:
- Press the Windows key + X on your keyboard and select System.
- Select Device Manager in the new window.
- Expand the Network adapters section and look for an entry for Wi-Fi or WLAN. That is your Wi-Fi adapter. If there is no such entry, it means you don’t have a Wi-Fi adapter on your device.
To check if the adapter supports hosted networks:
- Press the Windows key.
- Type cmd.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- In the Command Prompt window, enter this command:
netsh wlan show drivers
Press Enter.
- Check the result and follow the relevant instructions below.
| Result | What to do |
| No wireless interface found or a similar message | Your device does not have an active Wi-Fi adapter. Insert or enable a Wi-Fi adapter, then repeat the test. |
| Hosted network supported: No | Your Wi-Fi adapter does not support hosted networks. Use a compatible Wi-Fi adapter, then repeat the test. |
| Hosted network supported: Yes | Your Wi-Fi adapter supports hosted networks. Continue to Step 2. |
Step 2: Create and Start a Hosted Network
- In the Command Prompt window, enter this command:
netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=YourSSID key=YourPassphrase- Replace YourSSID with the name you want to use for your Wi-Fi network. Also, replace YourPassphrase with the password you want to use.
When done, press Enter.
- Start the hosted network with this command:
netsh wlan start hostednetworkPress Enter.
Step 3: Start CyberGhost VPN
- Open CyberGhost VPN on your Windows device.
- Connect to a VPN server.
Important: Keep CyberGhost VPN connected while you complete the next steps.
Step 4: Share Your VPN Connection with the Hosted Network
Use the Windows Internet Connection Sharing feature to share your CyberGhost VPN connection with the hosted network:
- Press Windows key+X and select Network Connections.
- Select Network and Sharing Center.
- Find the CyberGhost connection and click on it.
- Click Properties.
- Select the Sharing tab and check the box next to Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection.
- From the Home networking connection dropdown, select the adapter that matches the SSID you created in step 2. This is usually listed as Local Area Connection XX*, where XX is the number assigned to the adapter.
- Click OK to finish.
Tip: If you only see a text field instead of the dropdown menu, close the Sharing tab and click OK. Then, repeat the sharing steps.
Step 5: Connect Devices to Your Hosted Network
You can now connect your device to the hosted Wi-Fi network you created. Follow these steps:
- Open the Wi-Fi settings on the device you want to connect.
- Search for available Wi-Fi networks.
- Select the Wi-Fi network name.
- Enter the Wi-Fi password.
- Select Connect.
If the connection works, your device will use the internet connection shared from your Windows device through CyberGhost VPN.
Note: CyberGhost VPN network adapters are only active while CyberGhost VPN is connected. If you disconnect, you may need to reconnect to the VPN and repeat the sharing steps in step 4.
