Download OpenVPN Configuration Files
- Log into your CyberGhostVPN account.
- Click VPN, scroll down to Manual setup, and then click Configure Device.
- In the next section, configure the following entries like this:
-
Protocol: Use either:
- OpenVPN 2.3: This is the UDP version. It allows higher speed than the TCP version but can result in broken downloads in some cases.
- OpenVPN 2.3 TCP: Allows more stable connections than the UDP version but is a bit slower. Choose this version if you have recurrent connection issues such as sudden disconnections.
- Country: Choose your preferred VPN server location. You can choose one location per configuration. If you want to change the location afterwards, you’ll need to create a different configuration.
- Server Group: Select the available server group from the list.
- Select Save Configuration.
- You’ll be taken to the VPN tab. Select View next to the configuration for the Synology NAS device you just created.
- Take note of the following:
- Username: The username generated for this configuration. This isn’t your regular CyberGhost account username. It only authenticates this manual configuration with CyberGhost’s servers.
- Password: The password generated for this configuration. This isn’t your regular CyberGhost account password. It only authenticates this manual configuration with CyberGhost’s servers.
Important: Please keep your username and password obtained during the configuration process at hand; you will be asked to enter them later in the setup.
- Select Download Configuration to download the configuration file to your computer.
The file contains:
- Server security certificate: ca.crt
- Client safety certificate: client.crt
- Key file: client.key
- OpenVPN configuration file: openvpn.ovpn
Turn Off IPv6
Before enabling VPN on your Synology, it’s recommended to disable IPv6 on the device to prevent IPv6 traffic from leaking out of the VPN tunnel.
To disable IPv6 on your Synology NAS device:
- Go to Control Panel > Network > Network Interface.
- Click the Network Interface tab and then Edit.
- In the Edit menu, click the IPv6 tab and select Off. Click OK.
After disabling IPv6, reboot your Synology.
Create a new VPN profile
To add a new VPN profile on the Synology NAS device:
- Go to Control Panel > Network > Network Interface.
- Select Create > Create VPN Profile.
Set Up Your VPN Profile
From the VPN Connection Method screen:
- Select OpenVPN (via importing a .ovpn file) and click Next.
- On the General Settings screen below, enter the following information:
- Profile name: Enter CyberGhost VPN or another name that helps you identify the connection.
- Username: Enter the username you received during the configuration process.
- Password: Enter the password you received during the configuration process.
Next, you’ll need to add the 4 files you downloaded with the configuration file. Here’s what file to upload in each field:
- Import .ovpn files: Click Browse and import the .ovpn file.
- CA certificate: Click Browse and import the ca.crt file.
- Client certificate: Click Browse and import the client.crt file.
- Client key: Click Browse and import the client.key file.
- Click Next.
- Check the boxes for Use default gateway on a remote network and Reconnect when the VPN connection is lost.
- Click Apply to continue.
Connect to the VPN Server
You should now see your new VPN profile in the network interface window. Click on your new VPN profile and then click Connect.
After a successful connection, the status of the profile will change to Connected and that's it!
