If your Chromebook supports Android apps, you can install the CyberGhost VPN app for Android. You can install it via Google Play (recommended) or sideload the Android APK file.
Refer to this guide to check if your Chromebook supports Android apps. If your device is incompatible, please refer to our guide to manually configure OpenVPN on Chromebook.
Note: To use CyberGhost VPN on your Chromebook, you will need to have an active subscription. Learn here how to purchase a CyberGhost VPN subscription.

Install the CyberGhost App from Google Play
This method works on Chromebooks that support Android apps and include the Google Play store.
Step 1: Enable Google Play on Chromebook
If you have never installed an Android app on your Chromebook, you may need to activate Google Play first. If the Play Store is already available in your app launcher, skip to Step 2.
To enable Google Play:
- At the bottom right, select the time.
- Select Settings.
- Select Apps > Manage Google Play preferences and select Turn on next to Google Play.
- In the pop-up window, select More.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation.
Note: The exact menu names and path may vary depending on the version of ChromeOS installed on your Chromebook.
If you don’t see a Google Play option in Settings: Your Chromebook may not support Android apps. If your device is managed by a school or workplace, your administrator may have disabled access to Google Play.
Step 2: Install the CyberGhost VPN App
- Open Google Play on your Chromebook.
- Type “CyberGhost” into the search bar and select the CyberGhost app.
- Click Install and wait for the app to download.
- Open the CyberGhost VPN app and sign in to your account. If you don’t yet have an account, you can purchase a subscription inside the app.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to connect to the VPN.
Note: For more help getting started with the app, refer to our Android support guides.
Install CyberGhost Using an APK
Sideloading the APK is an alternative if your Chromebook supports Android apps but the CyberGhost app is unavailable through Google Play.
Note that an APK does not add Android support to an incompatible Chromebook. Also, if your Chromebook is managed by a school or workplace, administrator policies may block APK installation entirely.
To get the APK file, contact our Support Team by using the live chat button below, submitting a ticket here, or emailing support@cyberghost.ro. Do not download CyberGhost from any unverified third-party website.
Important: An APK doesn’t update automatically, and you won’t be prompted to download a new version when it’s available. You should occasionally confirm you have the latest APK. Some features, including features that depend on Google services, such as in-app payments or push notifications, may not work with the APK version as well.
You can install the APK using either of the following methods:
Option 1: Install the APK Using Linux and ADB
This method requires a Chromebook that supports Android apps and the Linux development environment. To check, go to Settings > About ChromeOS > Developers. If the Linux development environment does not appear, use the Developer Mode method instead if possible.
Important: Turning off ADB debugging later requires a factory reset, which erases locally stored data. Back up important files before proceeding.
Step 1: Set Up Linux
If Linux is already enabled, skip to the next section.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Advanced > Developers.
- Next to Linux development environment, select Set up.
- Follow the on-screen instructions and wait for the installation to finish.
Step 2: Enable ADB Debugging
- Open Settings.
- Search for “Develop Android apps” and select the matching result.
- Turn on Enable ADB debugging.
- Select Restart and Continue.
- After the Chromebook restarts, select Confirm and sign in.
- Open the launcher and search for “Terminal.”
- Open Terminal, then select Penguin.
- Enter the following command:
sudo apt install adb
- If prompted to continue, press Y, followed by Enter.
- Then connect ADB to the Chromebook’s Android environment with the following command and press Enter:
adb connect arc
- When the authorization message appears, select Always allow from this computer, and then Allow.
Step 3: Install the CyberGhost APK
- Open the Files app.
- Move or copy the CyberGhost APK into the Linux files folder.
- Open Terminal and select Penguin.
- Enter the following command, replacing “CyberGhost.apk” with the exact filename:
adb install "CyberGhost.apk"
Keep the quotation marks if the filename contains spaces.
- Open the Chromebook launcher, select CyberGhost VPN, and sign into your account to connect.
Option 2: Install the APK Using Developer Mode (Not Recommended)
Some Chromebooks may allow APK installation through ChromeOS Developer Mode. Developer Mode allows you to install the APK directly from the Files app without using Linux or terminal commands.
Warning
Enabling Developer Mode significantly weakens your Chromebook’s built-in security, as it disables OS verification, a key security check that helps detect changes to your Chromebook’s system software.
However, Developer Mode must stay enabled for you to use the APK, not just while you install it. While Developer Mode is on, every startup will show a message that your OS verification is disabled. Enabling OS verification on this screen will essentially disable Developer Mode, which will in turn erase the entire device, including the APK file.
We do not recommend using this method unless you understand the risks involved.
To enable Developer Mode and install the CyberGhost APK file:
- Turn off the Chromebook.
- Press and hold Esc + Refresh, then press the Power button.
- When the recovery screen appears, press Ctrl + D.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to enable Developer Mode.
- Confirm the change when prompted. The Chromebook will erase its locally stored data and restart.
- Complete the Chromebook setup process and sign in again.
- Download the official CyberGhost APK (obtained from our customer support team).
- Open the Files app and locate the APK.
- Double-click the APK file.
- Review the warning, then select Continue or Install.
- Once installation finishes, open CyberGhost VPN from the launcher.
- Sign into your CyberGhost account and follow the on-screen instructions to connect.
