Step 1: Set Up Your VPN-Compatible Router
Configure your router with CyberGhost VPN using one of the following guides:
- How to configure OpenVPN for DD-WRT routers
- How to configure OpenVPN for TomatoUSB routers
- How to configure OpenVPN for TomatoUSB Merlin Build routers
Step 2: Connect Your Xbox to the Router
Once your router is running CyberGhost VPN, connect your Xbox to it like any other network.
Press the Xbox button to open the guide, then select Profile & system > Settings > General > Network settings.
- Ethernet: Plug your Xbox directly into the VPN router. Your network settings will be configured automatically.
- Wi-Fi: Select Set up wireless network, choose the VPN router's network from the list, and enter the password when prompted.
Once connected, all traffic from your Xbox will be routed through CyberGhost VPN automatically.
That's it. Once connected, all traffic from your Xbox will be routed through CyberGhost VPN automatically.
Step 3: Configure a Manual IP Address (If Needed)
By default your Xbox will automatically obtain an IP address from the router. You only need to configure a manual IP address if you want to assign your Xbox a fixed address on your network, for example, if your router requires a static IP for port forwarding.
To do this, go to:
- Go to Network settings > Advanced settings > IP settings.
- Select Manual and enter the following details:
- IP address: A unique address on your network, in the format 192.168.x.x. To check which addresses are already in use, log in to your router's admin page.
- Subnet mask: Usually 255.255.255.0.
- Gateway: The IP address of your VPN-compatible router.
Step 4: Verify the VPN is Working on Your Xbox
Once everything is set up, it’s important to confirm that your Xbox traffic is actually going through the VPN.
If your Xbox browser is available, visit an IP-checking site like whoer.net and compare the location shown to your VPN server location. The detected IP/location should match the VPN server you selected on your Mac.
