Requirements
For Internet Sharing to work, your Mac needs two network interfaces: one to connect to the internet and one to connect to your Xbox.
The most common setup is connecting your Mac to the internet via Wi-Fi and your Xbox to your Mac via Ethernet cable. If your Mac doesn't have a built-in Ethernet port, you'll need a USB or Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter.
Step 1: Install CyberGhost VPN on Your Mac
Install and activate CyberGhost VPN on your Mac. For instructions, see our guide on how to install CyberGhost VPN for Mac. Once installed, connect to a VPN server before proceeding.
Step 2: Enable Internet Sharing on Your Mac
macOS Ventura (13) and later:
- Select the Apple menu, then select System Settings.
- Select General, then select Sharing.
- Select Internet Sharing.
- From the Share your connection from dropdown, select the connection CyberGhost VPN is running on.
- Under To computers using, select how your Xbox connects to your Mac.
- Turn on the Internet Sharing toggle.
macOS Monterey (12) and earlier:
- Select the Apple menu, then select System Preferences.
- Open Sharing and select Internet Sharing.
- From the Share your connection from dropdown, select the connection CyberGhost VPN is running on.
- Under To computers using, select how your Xbox connects to your Mac.
- Check the Internet Sharing checkbox to enable it.
Step 3: Connect Your Xbox
On your Xbox, press the Xbox button to open the guide, then select Profile & system > Settings > General > Network settings.
- If you connected your Xbox to your Mac via Ethernet cable: Your network settings will be configured automatically.
- If you connected your Xbox to your Mac via Wi-Fi: Select Set up wireless network. Then choose your Mac's shared network from the list and enter the password when prompted.
Step 4: Configure a Manual IP Address (Optional)
By default your Xbox will automatically obtain an IP address from your Mac. You only need this step if your setup requires a static IP address.
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
- Select Profile & system > Settings > General > Network settings.
- Select Advanced settings > IP settings.
- Select Manual and enter the following:
- IP address: A unique address in the format 192.168.x.x. Make sure it's not already in use by another device.
- Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0.
- Gateway: Your Mac's IP address on the shared network.
Step 5: Verify the VPN is Working on Your Xbox
Once everything is set up, it’s important to confirm that your Xbox traffic is actually going through the VPN.
If your Xbox browser is available, visit an IP-checking site like whoer.net and compare the location shown to your VPN server location. The detected IP/location should match the VPN server you selected on your Mac.
