This guide shows you how to fix connection issues with CyberGhost VPN on Linux and guides you through the most common solutions.
Tip: Work through each step in order. After each one, try connecting again. If it works, you can skip the rest.

Restart the Linux Network Service
Start by restarting your Linux network service, then try to connect again. The command varies depending on your distribution.
Debian and Ubuntu
Run the command:
sudo service network-manager restart
Fedora, Alma, and Rocky
Run the command:
sudo systemctl restart NetworkManager
Connect with WireGuard®
If restarting didn't help, try connecting with WireGuard®. The command varies depending on the type of server you want to connect to.
For regular server locations, run:
sudo cyberghostvpn --traffic --country-code [two-letter country code] --wireguard --connect
Note: Replace “[two-letter country code]” with the corresponding two-letter country code, such as “CH.”
To connect to a streaming-optimized server location:
Note: To comply with the streaming site’s Terms of Use and CyberGhost Terms of Service, you should connect to a server location that matches the country where you are currently located.
- First check the available streaming services with this command:
cyberghostvpn --streaming --country-code
- Then run:
sudo cyberghostvpn --streaming "streaming service name" --country-code
[two-letter country code] --wireguard --connect
Note: Replace “streaming service name” with the exact name from the previous command's output, for example, "DAZN IN.” Also, replace “[two-letter country code]” with the corresponding two-letter country code, such as “IN.”

For P2P (Peer-to-Peer) server locations, run:
sudo cyberghostvpn --torrent --country-code [two-letter country code] --wireguard --connect
Note: P2P file sharing laws vary by country. In many countries, downloading or distributing copyrighted content without permission is illegal. Always check the laws in your country before using P2P networks, and ensure you only share files you have the legal right to distribute. Users are solely responsible for ensuring their use of P2P networks complies with all applicable laws, regulations, and third-party terms.
Try OpenVPN TCP or UDP
If WireGuard® doesn't work, switch to the OpenVPN protocol. Run the command that matches the configuration you want to use.
Note: Replace [CC] with a two-letter country code such as US, DE, FR.
| Protocol | Command |
| OpenVPN | cyberghostvpn --country-code [CC] --openvpn --connect |
| OpenVPN TCP | cyberghostvpn --country-code [CC] --tcp --connect |
| OpenVPN UDP | cyberghostvpn --country-code [CC] --udp --connect |
Try a Different Server Location
If the protocol change didn't help, the issue may be with the specific server you're connecting to. Some locations may provide a more stable connection depending on your network, distance from the server, and local connectivity conditions.
Reinstall CyberGhost VPN
If the connection still fails, try a clean reinstall. Start by removing the app completely with the following command:
sudo cyberghostvpn --uninstall
Once removed, reinstall it. For detailed instructions, check out our CyberGhost VPN setup for Linux guide.
Check Router Security or Parental Controls
Some routers include security or parental control settings that can block VPN connections. Log into your router’s admin panel, then check the security and parental control settings. If these settings are enabled, disable them temporarily and try to connect again. Check your router’s manual for detailed steps.
Disable IPv6
IPv6 can sometimes cause VPN connection issues. Disable IPv6, then try to connect again. You can disable IPv6 using either of these methods:
Reboot Your Router or Modem
Rebooting your router or modem refreshes your network connection and can clear issues that software-side fixes can't. To reboot:
- Unplug the power cables from your modem and router.
- Wait 30 seconds, then plug in your modem.
- Wait 30 seconds, then plug in your router.
- Wait 30 seconds, then try to connect again.
If you have a modem/router combo, unplug that device instead.
Use the Manual Connection Method
If none of the above steps resolved the issue, try connecting using the manual connection method.
