A VPN connection can fail for several reasons. This guide covers the most common potential issues and how to troubleshoot them.
How to Troubleshoot VPN Connection Issues on Android
Test your VPN as you go through the steps below to see if the issue persists.
Try a Different Location
Connection stability depends heavily on server distance and traffic. Trying a closer or less crowded location often fixes issues.
Tap Best Location on the dashboard, then tap a different country to connect.
Reboot Your Device
Hold down the power button and tap Restart to reboot your device.
Phones keep background processes and temporary network data running. Sometimes, old cache or frozen tasks can interfere with your VPN. Rebooting clears this information and helps resolve connection conflicts.
Reinstall the Application
Tap and hold the app icon, then tap Uninstall in the pop-up menu.
Next, reboot your device and reinstall CyberGhost VPN. This replaces any corrupted files and resets the app’s connection permissions from scratch.
Disable Battery Saving Mode
Go to your phone’s Settings > Battery.
Scroll down and toggle off Power saving.
Battery saving restricts background features and network performance to save power, which can interfere with your VPN connection.
Connect to a Different Network
Swipe down on your screen and switch from Wi-Fi to cellular data (or vice versa).
Then, try the VPN again.
Different networks use different routing paths and DNS rules, and some are configured to block VPN traffic. If the app connects properly on another network, the issue likely comes from the original network rather than the VPN.
Change Your VPN Settings
-
Open CyberGhost VPN and tap the gear icon in the top right corner, then select the VPN tab.
-
Tap VPN protocol and select WireGuard®.
This modern VPN protocol is designed for speed and instant connectivity, including while switching networks. It may help if your VPN often lags or disconnects. -
Enable Small packet size. This splits your data into smaller packets, which can travel across congested networks more easily without being dropped.
Reset Your Network
These steps won’t factory reset the phone, but they’ll erase your network settings, including Wi-Fi networks and passwords. This can clear hidden conflicts preventing your VPN from routing traffic.
-
Go to your phone’s Settings > General management (or Settings > System, depending on your device).
-
Scroll down and open the Reset menu.
-
Tap Reset mobile network settings. Tap Reset settings again, then enter your password when prompted and confirm.
-
Repeat the steps for Reset Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings.
- Reboot your device.
Disable IPv6 Support
Many networks support both IPv4 and IPv6. In some cases, the way your device or ISP handles IPv6 can affect VPN connectivity. Temporarily disabling IPv6 forces your device to use IPv4 and helps you check whether IPv6 routing is contributing to the issue.
-
Go to your Android Settings > Connections > Mobile networks.
-
Open Access Point Names and tap the gear icon next to your internet network.
-
Scroll down, tap APN protocol, and select IPv4.
-
Tap Save at the bottom of the screen to confirm changes.
