A VPN protocol is a set of rules used to establish a secure connection to a server. CyberGhost VPN offers two protocols on macOS Mojave and above: IKEv2 and WireGuard. Both are secure, but connection performance can vary from one user to another, so you can switch between them to see which works better for you.

To change your protocol in the CyberGhost VPN app:
- Select the gear icon in the top-right corner, then select Preferences...
In the General tab, under Protocol, choose between IKEv2 and WireGuard.
Note: WireGuard needs a helper tool to connect. The first time you connect using this protocol, you will get a pop-up to install it.
