This guide details how to set up CyberGhost VPN’s Smart DNS service on your DD-WRT router.
Note: Smart DNS is different from the CyberGhost VPN app. It changes how some DNS requests are handled, but doesn’t encrypt your internet traffic or provide privacy protections like the VPN does.

Set Up Smart DNS on Your DD-WRT Router
Enable Smart DNS
You must first enable the Smart DNS service inside your CyberGhost VPN account dashboard to get the Smart DNS addresses.
- Sign in to your CyberGhost VPN account.

Select Smart DNS on the left.

Select Enable Smart DNS.

You will now see a list of Smart DNS addresses. Make a note of the one you want to use.
Set Up Smart DNS on Your DD-WRT Router
To configure the Smart DNS service on your DD-WRT router:
- Enter 192.168.1.1 in your browser’s URL bar.
- Log into your router dashboard.
- Navigate to Setup > Basic Setup > WAN Setup > WAN Connection Type.
- Check the Ignore WAN DNS option.
- Next, head to Setup > Basic Setup > Network Setup > Network Address Server Settings (DHCP).
- Fill in the following fields:
- Static DNS 1: Enter the Smart DNS address you copied earlier from your account dashboard
- Static DNS 2: Leave blank.
- Static DNS 3: Leave blank.
- Next, check the following options:
- Use DNSMasq for DNS
- DHCP-Authoritative
- Forced DNS Redirection
- Click Save.
- Select Apply Settings.
Note: If the new DNS settings don’t take effect, you may need to reboot your router. If you are experiencing issues, read our Smart DNS troubleshooting guide.
