macOS
1. Completely Uninstall CyberGhost Using AppCleaner
To ensure CyberGhost does not leave behind support files, preferences, or other components, use AppCleaner to remove the app and its related files completely.
Download AppCleaner.
- Open your web browser and go to the official AppCleaner website.
- Download the latest version of AppCleaner for macOS.
- Once the download finishes, open Finder and select Downloads.
- Double-click the downloaded .zip file to extract it. You should now see AppCleaner.app.
- Drag AppCleaner.app into your Applications folder.
Open AppCleaner and Delete CyberGhost.
- Go to Finder > Applications, then double-click AppCleaner.
- If macOS asks whether you’re sure you want to open it, click Open.
- Open another Finder window and go to Applications.
- Find the CyberGhost VPN app, then drag and drop it into the AppCleaner window.
- Wait for AppCleaner to scan your Mac for files associated with CyberGhost.
- Leave the related CyberGhost files selected so AppCleaner can remove them along with the main app.
- Click Remove. AppCleaner will delete the selected application and its associated files.
- Enter your Mac password or use Touch ID if macOS asks you to authorize the removal.
- Open the Applications folder and confirm that CyberGhost is no longer listed.
2. Delete CyberGhost Network Interfaces
CyberGhost might leave behind network interfaces after you uninstall the app. Follow these steps to remove any CyberGhost-related interfaces.
- Click the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of your screen.
- Go to System Settings > Network.
- Select VPN, then click the Info (i) icon next to CyberGhost’s configuration.
- Click Remove Configuration, then confirm by clicking Remove if prompted.
3. Remove and Rejoin the Wi-Fi Network
Removing and reconnecting to your Wi-Fi network refreshes the connection and clears saved network settings that may be contributing to the API connection issue.
Follow the steps below to remove the saved Wi-Fi network and reconnect to it.
- Click the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of your screen.
- Select System Settings and click Wi-Fi in the sidebar.
- Click Details next to the Wi-Fi network you’re currently connected to.
- Click Forget This Network and click Remove to confirm.
- Return to the Wi-Fi settings.
- Find your network under the list of available networks.
- Click the network name to reconnect.
- Enter the password for the Wi-Fi network when prompted.
- Click OK.
4. Reset the Network Location
Creating a new network location gives your Mac a fresh set of network settings, which can help resolve configuration issues that may be preventing CyberGhost from reaching the API.
Follow the steps below to reset the network location.
- Click the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of your screen.
- Select System Settings.
- Click Network in the sidebar.
- Click the More (…) button at the bottom of the Network settings.
- Select Locations.
- Click Edit Locations.
- Click the plus (+) button.
- Enter a name for the new location, such as CyberGhost Test.
- Click Done.
- Select the location you just created.
- Click Done or Apply, depending on your macOS version.
- Return to System Settings > Wi-Fi.
- Select your Wi-Fi network.
- Enter the Wi-Fi password if prompted, then click OK.
5. Perform Additional Network Troubleshooting
The following network troubleshooting steps can help refresh your Mac’s network connection and address connectivity problems.
Turn Wi-Fi Off and Back On
- Click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar or Control Center.
- Use the toggle to turn Wi-Fi off.
- Wait a few seconds.
- Turn Wi-Fi back on.
- Wait for your Mac to reconnect to your network.
Restart Your Mac
- Click the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of your screen.
- Select Restart.
- Click Restart again if macOS asks you to confirm.
Flush the DNS Cache
- Open Finder.
- Go to Applications > Utilities.
- Double-click Terminal.
- Enter the following command and press Return: “sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder”
- Enter your Mac administrator password if prompted. The Terminal will not display the password as you type it.
- Press Return.
- Close the Terminal when the command finishes.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC)
If you have a Mac with Apple silicon:
- Click the Apple menu > Shut Down.
- Wait until your Mac has completely turned off.
- Wait about 30 seconds.
- Press the power button to turn your Mac back on.
Macs with Apple silicon do not have a separate manual SMC reset procedure. Restarting or shutting down and turning the Mac back on resets the relevant power-management functions automatically.
If you have an Intel-based Mac with the T2 security chip:
- Shut down your Mac.
- On the built-in keyboard, press and hold Control + Option + Shift + Power button for 10 seconds.
- Release all the keys and wait a few seconds.
- Press the power button to turn your Mac back on.
6. Disable the macOS Firewall
Temporarily disabling the macOS firewall can help you determine whether it is blocking CyberGhost from reaching the API.
To disable your firewall, follow these steps.
- Click the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of your screen.
- Select System Settings.
- Click Network in the sidebar.
- Select Firewall.
- Turn off the toggle.
- If macOS asks you to authenticate, enter your administrator password or use Touch ID.
7. Disable Any Third-Party Antivirus Software
Third-party antivirus or security software can sometimes block CyberGhost from communicating with its API. Temporarily disabling the software can help you determine whether it is causing the connection issue.
Follow these steps to disable your third-party antivirus software.
- Open Finder > Applications and locate your antivirus app.
- Open the antivirus application.
- Look for an option such as Settings, Preferences, or Protection.
- Open the section that controls real-time protection, web protection, firewall features, or network monitoring.
- Turn off or pause the antivirus protection temporarily.
- Enter your administrator password or use Touch ID if macOS asks you to authorize the change.
- Click the Apple menu in the upper-left corner of your screen.
- Select Restart.
- Click Restart again if macOS asks you to confirm.
8. Reinstall CyberGhost VPN
After completing the previous troubleshooting steps, reinstall the latest version of CyberGhost to make sure you’re using fresh app files with the most recent updates.
- Open your web browser and visit the CyberGhost website.
- Download the latest version of the CyberGhost VPN app for macOS.
- Once the download finishes, open the downloaded installation file.
- If macOS displays a security prompt, click Open to continue.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to install the app.
- Enter your Mac administrator password or use Touch ID if macOS asks you to authorize the installation.
- Wait for the installation to finish.
- Open Finder > Applications.
- Double-click CyberGhost VPN.
- Sign in and connect to a server.

Windows
1. Uninstall CyberGhost Completely
Removing CyberGhost and any leftover files helps ensure that a clean reinstall does not reuse damaged or outdated app data.
Follow these steps to fully uninstall CyberGhost:
- Press the Windows key.
- Type “Control Panel,” then open it.
- Select Programs.
- Click Uninstall a program under Programs and Features.
- Find CyberGhost VPN in the list of installed programs and select it.
- Click Uninstall at the top of the window.
- Confirm that you want to remove CyberGhost if prompted.
- Follow the on-screen instructions until the uninstall process is complete.
- Press Windows + E.
- Type the following path in the File Explorer address bar: “C:\Program Files\” and press Enter.
- Look for a folder named CyberGhost.
- If the folder exists, right-click it and select Delete.
- Approve the action if Windows asks for administrator permission.
- Type the following path in the File Explorer address bar: “%LOCALAPPDATA%\” and press Enter.
- Look for a folder named CyberGhost.
- If the folder exists, right-click it and select Delete.
- Type the following path in the File Explorer address bar: “%APPDATA%\” and press Enter.
- Look for a folder named CyberGhost.
- If the folder exists, right-click it and select Delete.
- Restart your PC.
2. Reset Network Settings
Resetting your network configuration can clear corrupted TCP/IP, Winsock, and DNS settings that may prevent CyberGhost from reaching the API.
To reset your network settings:
Open Command Prompt as an Administrator
- Click the Start button.
- Type cmd or Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt in the search results.
- Select Run as administrator.
- If the User Account Control prompt appears, click Yes.
Reset Winsock
- In the Command Prompt window, type “netsh winsock reset” and press Enter.
- Wait for Windows to confirm that the Winsock catalog was reset successfully.
- Type “netsh int ip reset” and press Enter.
- Wait for the command to finish.
Release Your Current IP Address
- Type “ipconfig /release” and press Enter.
Your internet connection may disconnect temporarily. This is expected.
Request a New IP Address
- Type “ipconfig /renew” and press Enter.
- Wait for Windows to obtain a new IP address from your network.
Flush the DNS Cache
- Type “ipconfig /flushdns” and press Enter.
- Wait for Windows to confirm that it successfully flushed the DNS resolver cache.
- Close Command Prompt.
Restart Your PC
- Open the Start menu.
- Select Power > Restart.
3. Disable Windows Defender Firewall
Temporarily disabling Windows Defender Firewall can help you determine whether it is blocking CyberGhost from reaching the API.
- Click the Start button.
- Type Control Panel, then open it.
- Select System and Security.
- Click Windows Defender Firewall.
- In the left-hand menu, click Turn Windows Defender Firewall on or off.
- Under Private network settings, select Turn off Windows Defender Firewall (not recommended).
- Under Public network settings, select Turn off Windows Defender Firewall (not recommended).
- Click OK to save the new settings.
- If Windows asks for administrator permission, approve the change.
4. Disable Antivirus Software Temporarily
Third-party antivirus software can sometimes interfere with CyberGhost’s network connections. Temporarily disabling real-time protection can help you determine whether your antivirus is causing the “API unreachable” error.
To disable your antivirus, follow these steps.
- Click the Start button and find your antivirus software in the list.
- Open the antivirus app.
- Look for a section such as Settings, Protection, Security, or Real-Time Protection.
- Open the controls for real-time scanning, web protection, firewall protection, or network protection.
- Turn off or pause real-time protection.

- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- If Windows asks for administrator permission, approve the prompt.
- Find Network adapters in Device Manager,
- Click the arrow next to it to expand the list.
- Review the adapters for entries such as TAP-Windows Adapter or other virtual network adapters installed by VPN software.
- Identify adapters you recognize as belonging to VPN software you no longer use.
- Right-click the unused TAP adapter.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows gives you the option to remove the associated driver software, select it only if you are sure you no longer need that VPN software.
- Click Uninstall to confirm.
- Repeat the process to remove any other unused TAP adapters associated with old or conflicting VPN applications.
- Restart your PC.
6. Reinstall the Latest CyberGhost Version
Reinstalling the latest version of CyberGhost helps ensure you’re using fresh app files and the newest available updates.
- Open your web browser and go to the CyberGhost website.
- Download the latest version of CyberGhost VPN for Windows.
- Open File Explorer.
- Go to your Downloads folder or the location where you saved the installer.
- Find the CyberGhost installation file.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- If the User Account Control prompt appears, click Yes.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
7. Restart Your PC
Restart your PC after completing the troubleshooting steps to make sure Windows applies all network, firewall, driver, and application changes.
- Close any open applications.
- Click the Start button.
- Select Power.
- Click Restart.
- Wait for your PC to restart.
- Sign in to your Windows account when prompted.
- Make sure your PC reconnects to Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Open CyberGhost VPN and check whether the API Unreachable error still appears.

- Scroll down and tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Reset.
- Tap Reset Network Settings.
- Enter your iPhone passcode if prompted.
- Tap Reset Network Settings again to confirm.
- Your iPhone will restart automatically as part of the reset process. Wait until the device finishes restarting.
- Open Settings > Wi-Fi.
- Select your Wi-Fi network.
- Enter the Wi-Fi password, then tap Join.
2. Manually Reconfigure VPN Settings
Removing old or conflicting VPN configurations can help CyberGhost create a fresh VPN profile and restore normal connectivity.

- Tap General.

Low Data Mode can restrict background network activity, which may interfere with CyberGhost’s ability to communicate with its API.
To disable Low Data Mode, follow these steps.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Cellular.
- Tap Cellular Data Options.
- Tap Data Mode.
- Make sure Low Data Mode is not selected.
- Select Standard or Allow More Data on 5G, if available.
4. Reinstall CyberGhost
Reinstalling CyberGhost gives you a fresh copy of the app and can resolve issues caused by damaged or outdated app files.
Delete CyberGhost From Your iPhone
- Find CyberGhost VPN on your Home Screen or in the App Library.
- Touch and hold the CyberGhost icon.
- Tap Remove App.
- Tap Delete App.

- Open the App Store.
- Search for CyberGhost VPN.
- Tap the download icon to reinstall the app.
- Tap Open in the App Store, or open CyberGhost from your Home Screen.

- Tap Reset settings.
- Enter your PIN, password, or pattern if prompted.
- Tap Reset settings again to confirm.
- Press and hold the power button.
- Tap Restart.
- Wait for your device to start again.
- Open Settings > Network and internet > Internet.
- Select your Wi-Fi network.
- Enter the Wi-Fi password, then tap Connect.
Note: Resetting your network settings removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords, Bluetooth pairings, and some mobile network settings. You’ll need to reconnect to Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth devices afterward.
2. Disable Private DNS

- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Network and internet.
- Tap Private DNS. On some Android devices, you may need to tap Advanced first.
- Select Off. If your device does not offer an Off option, select Automatic instead.
- Tap Save if your device shows a Save button.
3. Reinstall the CyberGhost App
