On Windows, the TAP driver is a network software component that helps create secure virtual network interfaces. If a TAP driver error occurs, it can interfere with CyberGhost VPN connections. In this case, the easiest solution is usually to restart the TAP driver.
Note: The guides below work on both Windows 10 and 11.

Disable and Re-Enable the TAP Adapter

Type “network connections” in the Start menu and click View network connections.

You will now see a list of network adapters. Right-click the adapter with the undername TAP-Windows Adapter V9.

Click Disable. This will automatically turn off the adapter.

Next, right-click the adapter again and click Enable. Try reconnecting to CyberGhost, to see if it resolves any issues. If not, you need to reinstall your TAP adapter.
Reinstall the TAP Adapter
If restarting the TAP adapter doesn’t fix the issue, you may have to reinstall it.
Uninstall the TAP Adapter

Select Start, enter “device manager,” and click the result.

Click Network adapters to expand the list.

Double-click TAP-Windows Adapter V9.

Click the Driver tab.

Click Uninstall Device.

Check Delete the driver software for this device and click Uninstall.
Install the TAP Adapter
The easiest way to install the TAP adapter is to reinstall the CyberGhost VPN app, as the installation process will automatically set up the TAP adapter on your device. For assistance, read our Windows app installation guide.
