This guide will show you how to change Domain Name System (DNS) settings on your macOS device.
DNS translates domain names into IP addresses, enabling your browser to load the correct pages. Normally, you use your internet service provider's (ISP's) DNS servers for this. However, you can manually change DNS settings:
- For better security or faster connections when not using the VPN
- To fix DNS issues when using the WireGuard® protocol

Fix DNS Issues When Using the WireGuard® App
Change Your DNS Settings
Note: If you want to use a third-party DNS provider, you need to disconnect from CyberGhost VPN first. While connected, your DNS queries are automatically redirected and encrypted through CyberGhost VPN's servers, which overrides any custom DNS settings.
-
Select the Apple menu in the top-left corner, then select System Settings.
-
Go to Network and select your connected network (for example, Wi-Fi), then select Details.
-
Select the DNS tab, then select the + button under DNS Servers to add the DNS addresses provided by the service of your choice.
-
Select OK.
Fix DNS Issues When Using the WireGuard® App
When using the WireGuard® protocol on macOS via the WireGuard® app, your DNS settings may not be applied automatically, leaving your DNS traffic unprotected. To fix this, you can add CyberGhost VPN's DNS addresses manually.
Follow the same steps as above, and when you get to the DNS tab, select the + button under DNS Servers and add the following addresses:
10.101.0.243
194.187.251.67
Still having issues?
Consider using WireGuard® with CyberGhost VPN on macOS rather than configuring it manually. The app handles DNS settings automatically when using the WireGuard® protocol. You can learn how to switch to WireGuard® in your CyberGhost VPN app here.
