Several factors can prevent a VPN connection from being established. This article covers troubleshooting steps to help resolve connectivity issues. After each step, check whether the issue is still present.
Start With the Basics
- Restart your device: Sometimes restarting your Mac resolves the issue.
- Try a different server location: One location may offer a more stable connection than another, so try connecting to a different server.
- Reboot your router or modem: Unplug the power cables from both your modem and router. Wait 30 seconds, plug the modem back in, wait another 30 seconds, then plug the router back in. Give the network a final 30 seconds to refresh before reconnecting. If you have a router/modem combo, unplug that single device instead.
- Reinstall the application: Uninstall the app, restart your Mac, then install the app again and try connecting. This can replace any corrupted app files that may be causing the issue.
Check for Interference
- Temporarily disable apps that may interfere: Some apps that can control your network may interfere with your CyberGhost VPN connection. A firewall, antivirus, or anti-spyware program may block the connection. Try temporarily disabling these to see if the issue is resolved.
- Remove any security or parental controls from your router: Some ISPs (Internet Service Providers) ship their routers with security controls enabled by default. Log into your router and check whether any security features or parental controls are turned on.
Advanced Steps
- Disable IPv6 support: IPv6 can sometimes interfere with the VPN connection. For instructions, see our guide on how to disable IPv6 on macOS.
- Reset TCP/IP (renew DHCP lease): Renewing your DHCP lease gives your Mac a fresh IP address from your router, which can clear network conflicts that may be blocking the VPN connection. Here’s how to do it:
- Select the Apple menu in the top-left corner, then select System Settings.
- Select Network, then select your connected network (for example, Wi-Fi).
- Select Details… next to the connected network.
- Select the TCP/IP tab, then select Renew DHCP Lease.
- Select OK, then restart your Mac.
