When you connect CyberGhost VPN on a Mac using the WireGuard® protocol, you may be prompted to install a “Helper” tool. This is normal and necessary for the VPN to work properly.
Why Is It Needed?
The reason comes down to how macOS handles different VPN protocols. IKEv2 is built directly into macOS, so the operating system manages those connections itself without any additional components. WireGuard®, however, is not natively supported by macOS, which means CyberGhost VPN has to set up and manage its own network interface and routing rules to make it work.
However, macOS restricts what apps can do on your system by default, and changing network settings requires a higher level of access than a regular app is allowed. To get around this safely, macOS has a built-in approval process that lets apps request that extra access by installing a small background component.
That's the helper tool. It runs in the background with just enough access to do its job, and nothing more.
Is It Safe?
Yes. The helper tool itself is a standard, Apple-approved mechanism used by VPNs, backup tools, and many other Mac utilities that need elevated access. It only performs the specific network tasks required to run the VPN.
To install the helper tool, macOS will ask you to authenticate using your Mac administrator password or Touch ID. This prompt is also a standard macOS system dialog. CyberGhost VPN doesn’t see or has access to what you type or authenticate with. The app only receives a yes or no result from the operating system.
What the Helper Tool Does
Once installed, it handles four things that require root-level access:
- Sets up the network devices for the WireGuard® connection
- Starts and stops the WireGuard® connection
- Routes your traffic through the WireGuard® interface
- Restores your network settings when you disconnect
